In Asakusa area where you can feel the atmosphere of Japan in the old times, there is a nice tavern called “Asakusa Ichimon” where you can enjoy Japanese dishes using Edo traditional vegetables. It takes about 3 minutes from Asakusa station and 7 minutes from Tawaramachi station on foot to the main store of “Asakusa Ichimon”. There is also an annex a little away from the main store.

The main store is the remodelment of a solitary Japanese style inn with a dirt floor, and there is a water mill in the courtyard. There is a unique rule that you should exchange your money to the wooden tag which is the currecy used in “Asakusa Ichimon”. It makes you feel that you are in a different world!!

At this tavern, you can eat fine Japanese dishes which use high-selected ingredients, water and salt. The fish and vegetables are delivered directly from the Tsukiji market or the farm from all over Japan, including Edo vegetables such as Kameido radish and Shinagawa turnip, and also rare vegetables such as purple asparagus. You can enjoy the delicious food and feel how each ingredient is selected and cooked carefully.

One of the recommendation is “Edo Negima Nabe”. This is a traditional Japanese cuisine eaten by common people in Edo period. Senju green onion and fatty tuna are cooked in the boiling soup stock, and the fat of the tuna melts into the soup which makes the taste rich. Simmered beef giblets and simmered whale meat are also their specialties.

There are many kinds of fine Japanese sake and shochu which go well with the Japanese dishes. They are selected by the owner who is a sake taster and also a sommelier, so you can expect the quality of alcohol drinks besides food.

If you want to feel the atmosphere of old days of Japan and have a nice Japanese meal, “Asakusa Ichimon” is one of the best choices.
